リチャード・アヴェドンのターニング・ポイントとなった写真集『InTheAmericanWest』。テキサス州AmonCarterMuseumの依頼により、アヴェドンは1979年より6年間かけて自らが撮りたい被写体を求めてアメリカ西部を旅し、16州計762名の人物を撮影しました。炭坑夫、建築労働者、農家、トラック運転手、ウエイトレス、学生、主婦など今までアヴェドンが写してきた華やかなモデルやアーティストとは全く異なる一般的な人々。しかし、その表情や佇まいにひそむ人間の「強さ」「弱さ」「愛」そして「尊厳」。。。本書のモデルの一人となったトラック運転手のBillyMuddは、アヴェドンが写した自らのポートレートに自分自身の本当の姿をはじめて確認し、人生のやり直しを誓い、運転手を辞めて離れていた家族のもとへ帰っていきました。自分自身さえも気付いていない人間の内面を鋭く写し出すアヴェドンのポートレートには、研ぎすまされた感性とやさしい愛が宿っています。
